More from the Summer of 2014

The sun is shining!  It's cold anyway, and there is another blizzard due to start in about 24 hours, but at least it's not snowing NOW.  There's nothing much to do outside, so here I am, continuing with the blog update!

Slowly working my way from early July into mid-July, this represents only two days:

LOVE IS A PROMISE, by Jerabek, 2002; Mid; DOR TET; 30" x 6"

BIG BROTHER, by Brown, E.C., '84; Early Mid; SEV DIP; 24"x 7"

Daylilies from July of 2014

To continue my catching up on last summer's blooms (and yes, it's snowing -- again!) I offer these:

ENGLISH WITCH, Salter, EH, '93; Early Mid; SEV TET; 25"x 4.5".  Originally in a "holding bed" (for nine years!) I finally moved it to the Harry Potter themed garden.  Logical, right?

DARK STAR, Connell, '53; Early Mid; DOR DIP; 32" x 7"; spider.   This one is quite vigorous, and bloomed a lot more in its new location than it ever had in its old one.  Must like the extra sunshine!  I really took a lot of pleasure in this one, in summer of 2014.

COURT TROUBADOUR, by Brooks, H, '85; Early; DOR TET; 26" x 6.5".  Not a terrific bloom, and I wasn't going to post the photo, but I clicked on it by accident, so ... here it is.  It has had a struggle in the King Arthur themed garden, which got overrun by raspberry bushes (horrid things!) and some monarda that went nuts.

DOUBLE RIVER WYE, by Kropf, F.A., '83; Midseason; DOR DIP; 30" x 4.5".

EROGENOUS ZONE, by Hanson, C, 2000; Mid; SEV TET; 36"x 7".
The picture just doesn't do this one justice!  In "person," it's far more lovely.

ISLE OF DREAMS, by Morss, '89; Early Mid; SEV TET;  22" x 6".  It hasn't been particularly vigorous here, but it does survive and come back each year, multiplying a bit.

KING CREOLE, by Benz, '88; Mid; DOR TET; 26"x 5".

LITTLE JUDY, by Russell, '57; Mid-Late; DOR DIP; 30" (height only given for the very early cultivars).  This bloomed a bit early because it was almost ready to throw buds when it was dug up and sent to me this past spring.  I guess it's guided by hormones, which were already established at that time.  I don't expect it to be quite so early from now on.  There is no telling just when a new transplant will bloom, or even IF it will bloom, the first year.

MING TOY, by Wheeler, R., '48; Early; EV DIP; 20" (height only, see above).  Bloom size is somewhat small; I haven't measured it.  Seems like there was something quirky about one sepal on every single bloom; perhaps that is a hallmark of the cultivar?  Makes it easier to identify, I guess.

All the above photos were taken on the same day, or close to that, early in the second week of July, 2014.  We are getting into deeper territory with peak bloom season, here. I've been recording FFO's for a couple of years, and in both years the peak was on July 13th, with the most cultivars showing their "First Flower Open" of the season.  Hold onto your hat!!!

Daylilies from the 2014 gardens

Well, looks like I left off on July 5th, so anything that I took photos of after that should be fair game, unless older pics of the same flower are already on the blog.  If I repeat myself, please forgive.
CHIARA, by Rood, K., '09; Mid, DOR DIP, 28"x3".  This was a bonus gift from one of the venders I bought other daylilies from.  It's one of their own hybrids!

DELICATE DESIGN, by Ferguson, '80; Early; DOR TET; fragrant; 28"x6".  I had thought this one was dead, long ago!  SURPRISE!  Sometimes ya gotta love the surprises that daylilies can bring ya!

ODDS BODKINS, by Reed, 2008; Early Mid; DOR DIP; UFO crispate; 38"x7".  New to my garden last year, and much time spent in a pot, so never attained that size.  But I am so looking forward to seeing a great performance by this one in years to come.

************************
BILL CROCKER, by Crocker, G., '81; EM; DOR DIP; 25"x 4".

BILL NORRIS, by Kirchhoff, D., '93; Mid; SEV TET; fragrant; 29"x5" -- Won the Stout Silver Medal in 2002!  I fell in love with it before it had won, and was so pleased that the new addition to my garden was an SSM winner that very year! I'm putting together an SSM-themed garden, but Bill hasn't made it over to that area yet.  This year, for certain!

MOON WITCH, by Salter, E.H., '90; Early-Mid; SEV TET; 26" x 4".  I've had this for years, up close to the house.  I'm structuring theme gardens (because it's fun, no better reason!) and this will go into the Harry Potter themed garden, this year.  I have newly acquired "Luna" (not here yet, but won on auction) and they both will stand in for the Harry Potter series character, Luna.

PAPER BUTTERFLY, by Morss, '83; Early; SEV TET; 24" x 6".  Another one I was afraid I had lost, but .... here it is!

SILOAM JUNE BUG, by Henry, P., '78; Early Mid; DOR DIP; 23" x 3".

And lastly, for today that is:
NUTMEG ELF, by McCabe, '78; Early Mid; DOR DIP; sp 4.6; 18" x 3".  I've had this sweetheart since 2002, and divided it for the first time in 2014 -- should have been done much sooner!  But, simple as this one is, it's one of my faves, as the blooms go on and on and on!  It needs to be deadheaded often, because this li'l girl is a bit of a slut.  Pods everywhere, if you don't nip them frequently.  Her nectar must be very sweet; it seems the bees must visit every blossom!  And there are SO many blossoms!  This one must have been the inspiration for the term, "extended bloom," LOL!  (OK, not really, but she is the embodiment of it, IMO.)

So... that's enough for today.  It's still snowing, and will continue until day after tomorrow, according to the weather reports.  No worries, except I have two appointments tomorrow, which could be cancelled if need be.  I don't go back to work until Tuesday, anyway!  Til then, I sketch, and dream of daylilies basking in the summer sun......

Saturday, February 7, 2015

I do believe I have broken my promise!  That is, my promise to show lots of photos of my daylilies, in my 2014 gardens!  It's now the middle of winter, and a snugly (albeit cold) thick, white blanket covers all the plants sleeping out there.  The past two and a half weeks have been loaded with snow and more snow; the winds are occasionally pretty scary; the temperatures have been on a roller coaster, but generally VERY low.  I get on the internet and cruise flower sites, dreaming of spring and summer.  That can get expensive!  So, in the quiet of the current snowstorm spanning four days (it has started already!) I'll try to get on here often and show you some of what I got to see, half a year ago.  Therapy!

I shall begin tomorrow.

Now, hopefully the power stays on.
